A proper deli-style breakfast without the deli price tag or calorie bomb. Using bagel thins instead of full bagels cuts the carbs in half, and smoked salmon delivers quality protein plus omega-3 fatty acids.

Ingredients

  • 1 bagel thin (e.g. New York Bakery Co.)
  • 80g smoked salmon
  • 30g light cream cheese (e.g. Philadelphia Light)
  • 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • A few capers
  • Fresh dill (optional)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • Black pepper

Method

  1. Toast the bagel thin to your preference.
  2. Spread the cream cheese evenly over both halves.
  3. Layer the smoked salmon on top.
  4. Add the red onion slices and capers.
  5. Finish with fresh dill, a squeeze of lemon juice, and a grind of black pepper.

Pro Tip

Aldi and Lidl both sell excellent smoked salmon at a fraction of the Tesco or Sainsbury's price. Stock up when it's on offer and freeze it — defrost overnight in the fridge.

Nutrition Notes

80g of smoked salmon delivers around 18g protein with minimal fat. Combined with the cream cheese and bagel thin, you get a balanced breakfast at 350 calories. The omega-3s from the salmon also support recovery during hard training blocks.
