Xtend Original is arguably the most well-known BCAAs brand globally, and it's built that reputation on a formula that includes more than just BCAAs. The addition of citrulline and glutamine alongside electrolytes makes it one of the more complete intra-workout amino acid products available in the UK.

What Is It?

Xtend Original BCAAs is an American intra-workout supplement that has become a gym bag staple for endurance athletes and bodybuilders alike. It's available in an extensive range of flavours, including several licensed collaborations, and is distributed widely across UK supplement retailers.

Ingredients & Nutrition

xtend bcaas

Per 14.3g serving: 7g BCAAs in 2:1:1 ratio (3.5g leucine, 1.75g isoleucine, 1.75g valine), 2.5g L-glutamine, 1g citrulline malate, 1.17g electrolyte blend (sodium, potassium, magnesium). Zero calories.

The 7g BCAA content is the standard for Xtend and has been associated with the brand since its founding. The glutamine addition is notable — glutamine supports immune function and gut health, and is often depleted during high-volume training. Citrulline malate at 1g is a token pump addition but appreciated. The electrolyte blend is modest.

Taste & Mixability

Xtend's flavour range is outstanding — Watermelon Explosion, Blue Raspberry Ice, and Strawberry Kiwi Splash are all genuinely excellent. The flavouring quality is noticeably better than most amino acid supplements. Mixability is superb; the powder dissolves instantly with no residue. It's become a benchmark for amino acid product taste.

Effectiveness

The combined BCAA, glutamine, and electrolyte formula produces a more complete intra-workout product than BCAAs alone. Glutamine at 2.5g provides meaningful support for gut integrity and immune function during hard training blocks — an often overlooked benefit of the Xtend formula. The BCAA dose is solid, though the complete EAA profile remains missing.

Value for Money

At £24.99 for 30 servings (429g), you're paying approximately £0.83 per serving. That's the most expensive product in this comparison. The premium is partially justified by the glutamine and citrulline additions, though similar value can be obtained at lower cost from Bulk EAA or Applied Nutrition's amino-hydrate. The flavour quality arguably contributes to the price premium.

      Verdict

Xtend Original earns its position as a premium BCAA product through genuine formula additions (glutamine, citrulline) and best-in-class taste. For intra-workout use during longer sessions, it delivers a good experience. However, Bulk EAA provides a more complete amino acid profile for less money, and Applied Nutrition's amino-hydrate offers better electrolytes. Xtend wins on taste; it doesn't win on value.
