MyProtein Slow-Release Casein does exactly what it says on the bag — it digests slowly, sustaining amino acid release over several hours. It's not the most exciting product in the range, but as an overnight protein or a meal gap filler, it earns its place.

What Is It?

Slow-Release Casein is a micellar casein powder designed to provide a prolonged protein feed — typically used before bed to support overnight muscle recovery. Unlike whey, which spikes amino acids quickly, casein creates a steady trickle that research suggests can last four to seven hours.

Ingredients & Nutrition

myprotein slow release casein

Per 30g serving, you get 23g of protein, 1.6g of fat, and 1.5g of carbohydrates at 107 calories. The primary ingredient is micellar casein, which is the intact, slow-digesting form of casein rather than the cheaper casein calcium caseinate. That matters — micellar casein has a more favourable amino acid profile and slower digestion rate.

The formula is clean: micellar casein, cocoa powder (in chocolate variants), flavouring, thickener (xanthan gum), and sweetener (sucralose). No unnecessary fillers. The leucine content is around 1.8g per serving — lower than whey per gram, but adequate given the sustained-release mechanism.

Taste & Mixability

Casein is inherently thicker than whey, and this one is no exception. In 200–250ml of water, it produces a pudding-like consistency — some people enjoy this, others find it off-putting. With milk, it's considerably more palatable. Chocolate Smooth is the standout flavour; Vanilla is acceptable. Avoid mixing with too little liquid.

Mixability in a shaker is decent though not perfect — a few lumps are inevitable. Blending eliminates this completely, and blended casein can make a surprisingly good thick shake.

Effectiveness

The science behind pre-sleep casein consumption is well-established. Research published in the Journal of Nutrition has shown that 40g of casein protein before bed can increase overnight muscle protein synthesis rates. At 23g per serving, this product falls below the dosage used in leading studies, but it still contributes meaningfully to overnight recovery when combined with adequate overall protein intake.

For anyone training seriously and looking to maximise the anabolic window during sleep, casein is a worthwhile addition rather than a luxury.

Value for Money

At £27.99 for a 1kg bag (roughly 30 servings), you're paying around £0.93 per serving. That's reasonable for a micellar casein compared to ON Gold Standard Casein at nearly £1.20 per serving, though Bulk's Micellar Casein undercuts it at around £0.83. MyProtein frequently discounts this to £20–£22, which makes it excellent value.

      Verdict

MyProtein Slow-Release Casein is a no-frills, effective overnight protein. It won't win awards for taste or texture, but the nutrition profile is solid and the micellar casein base means you're getting a quality ingredient. If you're already hitting your daily protein through whey and food, adding casein before bed is one of the more evidence-backed tweaks you can make to your recovery nutrition.
